/>

I bought a subscription to the new SENukeX SEO software when it launched a couple of days ago. Here are my first impressions:

1. There is no manual provided with the software (which runs on your PC rather than as a script on a website). Nor is a fast-start guide provided nor any kind of documentation to help the newbie get started.

2. Video training (12 videos in all) is provided. However, these videos seem, to me at least, to be aimed at existing SENuke users who are transitioning to the new SENukeX software. The video training does explain each module in the software and how to use it. But they don’t explain WHY, WHEN or WHERE you’d apply those modules. The software’s modules do things like submit articles to article directories, submit links to Web 2.0 and Social sites, do RSS submissions, etc. Quite complex schedules for submitting articles and links can be set up in the software but that’s only alluded to in the videos.

3. In order for the software to set up the numerous accounts needed to make use of this system, you really also need to subscribe to a decapcha service (this is a service that reads the graphical capcha’s that various sites use to prevent automated submissions, converts those graphics to text, and inserts the text into the appropriate box on a form). Basically, using a decapcha service makes account creation completely automatic and requires no user-intervention.

Accounts need to be created at Social Bookmarking sites, Web 2.0 properties, etc. The accounts themselves are free to set up but the decapcha service isn’t free. The cheapest available charges about $1.35 for 1,000 solved capchas. Doesn’t sound like a lot but trawling the forum I found that a medium user of SENukeX could expect to pay about $35 per month in decapcha fees. Now, a medium user would be doing a lot with this software so the $35 fee quoted is probably a max for all but the most heavy users of SENukeX.

However, even if the fees are just a couple of bucks per month, there’s no mention on the sales page that extra fees over and above what you pay for SENukeX itself would be required.

4. <s>SENuke had a module for doing Niche Research. There doesn’t appear to be such a module in SENukeX. If it is there, I certainly can’t find it. </s>
[Update: I put a query about this in the SENukeX forum and a responder there pointed out where I can find the Niche Research module. You have to create a campaign first before many aspects of the software become available. A little quick-start documentation could have resolved this before it became an issue.]

5. People who signed up to the Early Bird list to receive advance notification of the SENukeX launch were given 5 templates to use with the software for backlinking strategies. They were provided in a Zip file. The accompanying email tells you that you can load the templates with just two clicks. But it doesn’t tell you where in the software those two clicks have to be applied. In other words, there are no actual instructions telling you how to load up those “special” templates.

6. SENukeX got a lot of exposure before it launched so their servers were hit hard in the stampede to get the software. That’s mostly settled down now. A lot of people have taken up the 14-day trial offer so they can see what the software is capable of. Many of those people have signed up on the recommendations of other people.

And since they’re new to the software, rather than SENuke users who are upgrading to SENukeX, the lack of a basic manual and description of how everything hangs together, is leaving people stuck in the mud, not knowing what to do or how to progress with the software. I count myself in that camp.

There have been several posts on the SENuke forum from newbie’s asking for a manual or some basic documentation but, to date, the neither the software team nor the moderators have answered those calls nor provided any of the information requested. That’s not good customer support. Now that may just be down to them having to deal with a much larger number of people buying/trying SENukeX and having to spend time keeping the servers online, but releasing a product without documentation is not very professional.

I suspect that the folks involved are too close to the product and have made the fundamental, and all too common, mistake of assuming “if it’s obvious to me then it must be obvious to everyone else”. They seriously need to address the documentation (or lack of it) issue. The training videos weren’t even provided by a member of the in-house staff but by a SENuke user who was a beta tester for SENukeX. That’s not to say that they’re bad – they’re not; they’re actually very good, but they don’t describe how the system hangs together which is what newbies need in order to get their a-ha! moment with the software.

Final Words

I trust what people who recommended SENukeX to me have said – that it is probably the most powerful SEO tool available. After all, they’ve been using SENuke for the last year or two.

The problem lies with the SENukeX team in not providing basic documentation, which any user has a right to expect to be included with any piece of software they buy.

There is a “Wizard” that walks you through setting up a campaign in the system, but little is explained as you proceed through the steps. It’s a do-this, fill in that box, click this button approach. But the user is consistently left with questions such as: Why do I need to do this? How does this relate to what I did last? How does this module relate to that module; Why are things done this way?

SENukeX may be a great product (I’ve yet to assess if it is or not as I can’t get started with it) but it’s crippled by the lack of documentation, leaving many users, especially newbies, high and dry and not knowing what to do next or how to use the software. I really wanted to write a glowing review of it but at the moment I can’t do that since I haven’t figured out how to use the software. I’ll probably have to start with the “Wizard” and accept that some of my decapcha fees will have to be sacrificed during the learning process.

I expect that a lot of people on the trial will cancel before they’re billed and that there’ll be quite a few cancelling their subscription before the rebill date comes around.

Imagine buying a small, high-performance plane on the assumption that flying lessons would be part of the deal. You go to collect your new shiny toy only to be handed the keys and told – it’s up to you how to figure out how to fly this thing. That’s SENukeX.

It’s time to learn how to fly. Sure, there’ll be plenty of crashes along the way but at least they’ll all be crashes I’ll be able to walk away from.

SiteSell offer. SiteSell is a system for building and promoting a website (and much more). It costs $299 per year per site. Expensive but worth the money as sites built with their system routinely rank in the top 3% of sites worldwide.

I built a site with them put pulls in $150-$200 per month in Adsense alone, so it provides at least a 600% return on investment. You can read a review of SiteSell here: SiteSell Review

SiteSell’s offer, valid until midnight December 25, is if you buy one site package from them, they’ll give you another one for free. Well worth considering.

Now for those who build WordPress blogs…

MaxBlogPress Pre-Christmas Offer:

MaxBlogPress are running a Christmas event where they’re offering 5 of their top plugins at a 70% discount. The catch is that the 5 plugins are being sold as a bundle and the discount does not apply if you buy individual plugins.

The plugins would normally cost $475 but with the 70% discount the 5 plugin bundle is just $137.

And the offer closes at midnight EST on December 14.

Check it out here.

These are the plugins on offer:

- MaxBlogPress Subscribers Magnet [retails for $147] – I use this on all my blogs where I’m building an <a

Even if you’re only interested in the Subscriber’s Magnet plugin, you’d still save $10 buying it as part of this offer and get 4 other products basically for free.

<a

Barring a catastrophic failure of my PC, hard drive or Windows, I expect every work day to start out the same.

That didn’t happen two days ago on November 16th.
The PC and all its gubbins were working ok, but I couldn’t get Firefox to open any websites. Very occasionally, Firefox gets its knickers in a twist and won’t open a connection to a site. Restarting it usually cures the problem. This time it didn’t. More frequent than Firefox connection problems is the demise of some software service on my PC that controls ‘net access. I don’t know if it’s a Windows software problem or something to do with ZoneAlarm or Avira Antivirus that run on my PC. But this particular issue is cured by a complete reboot.

After rebooting, I noticed that the lights on the router weren’t lighting up correctly. The DSL light would flash and them turn off for several seconds, then repeat that behaviour. The Internet light never came on.

Aha! It’s a loose connection somewhere. Nope. All leads sitting firmly in their connectors. I checked the phone handset to see if I was getting a dial tone in case there was a problem with the phone itself. And was nearly deafened by a constant blast of static on the line.

After re-checking the connections to make sure there were no short-circuits, I came to the conclusion that the actual phone line was at fault.

So I rang the phone company. They have a nice (read: irritating) automated system where a soulless voice takes you through the options. Rather than being asked to press a button on the handset, this system asks you to say what option you want. You feel like a fool talking to a machine. That’s customer relations for you. The “conversation” went something like this:

Robot: “Hello, you’ve reached Eircom customer service. In order for me to assist you further, please say which of the following options applies to you…Bill Enquiry, Change Payment Method, Fault Report, Broadband Technical Support”

Me: “Fault Report”.

Robot: “I think you said: Fault Report. Is that correct?”

Me: “Yes”.

Robot: “Thank you. Is this your home phone number or another number?”

Me: “Home phone”.

Robot: “I think you said: Home phone. Is that correct?”

Me: “Yes”. (Jeez!)

Robot: Before I can proceed with the fault report, what is the number of the phone you want to report?”

Me:

Robot: “I think you said: . Is that correct?”

Me: “Yes”.

robot: “Thank you. Please say your area code…”

..and on and on it went. Finally, it got to the point where it did a line check and came back to tell me there was a fault on the line (yes, that’s why I contacted your crappy service in the first place). Then it told me it would take two working days before an engineer could look at the fault to see what was actually wrong.

Give me a real human on the other end of the phone any day. A real person could have taken my details and given me the above info in a couple of minutes rather than the 10+ grueling minutes of frustration this process actually took.

The Fault Is found

Two days after reporting the fault, an engineer duly arrived on my doorstep. “Problem with your phone line?” he helpfully enquired. He tested the connections in the house. The problem didn’t lie there. He shimmied up the telephone pole, tested things there. No, problem wasn’t there either. His last port of call was the actual telephone exchange, a couple of miles up the road. “I’ll call you when I’ve figured out what’s wrong” he cheerily intoned as he headed off to his van.

About an hour later, I got a phone call. So the phone was working again. I asked him what had been wrong with my line. Seems some muppet in the exchange hadn’t fitted some wires correctly and one had come loose and fallen on my line, causing the interference.

So there’s the story. Someone’s sloppy work knocked out my phone line and broadband connection for 2+ days.

The Consequences

The big consequence is I couldn’t get online. That meant I couldn’t deal with customer queries. What’s more, I couldn’t even let them know why I’d apparently just dropped off the face of the planet. I couldn’t build websites or check existing ones. I couldn’t do any online training (video training). I had some bills to pay and missed the deadline on one of them.

I wouldn’t trust public PCs (e.g. ones in libraries or ones you can rent) with the login details to any of my accounts (email or otherwise) due to the security considerations. There’s just now way of knowing if, or how badly, such a PC has been compromised with malware and, having had my PayPal account hacked some time back, I’m more than a bit cagey about such things now.

This event has reminded me just how much I rely on that internet connection. My entire business depends on it. Pretty much everything I do has some online aspect.

So I didn’t know what to do with myself during my 2+ days of downtime. With the daily routine being unexpectedly interrupted, I had no backup plans that could kick into action. It looked like it was time to open the job jar and tackle a few of those things that had been put on the long finger – doing some redecorating, adding more insulation into the attic (loft) and, when I got tired of the manual work, dusting off my Xbox and playing a game or two on it.

But now that the phone line is back in operation, it’s back to work and some catching up to do on emails.

If anyone who heads up a customer service department should happen to read this, have mercy on your customers and treat them with some respect. Don’t foist automated answering systems on them. Employ someone to deal with your customers directly (and not from some one-size-fits-all call centre). You may not think the expense is justified but your customers will.

Following on from Amazon pulling the plug entirely on associates in Colorado in March this year due to a Sales tax measure introduced in that state, yesterday they fired out an email to associates about an upcoming change to their API which will affect a huge number of associates who use various plugins to add products and customer reviews to their sites. Here’s what they said in their email:

On November 8, 2010 the Reviews response group of the Product Advertising API will no longer return customer reviews content and instead will return a link to customer reviews content hosted on Amazon.com. You will be able to display customer reviews on your site using that link. Please refer to the Product Advertising API Developer guide found here for more details. The Reviews response group will continue to function as before until November 8 and the new link to customer reviews is available to you now through the Product Advertising API as well.

What this means is that Amazon will, as of Nov. 8th 2010, no longer be providing customer reviews through their API. So you won’t be able to add customer reviews to your posts and articles as you have done in the past. Amazon, instead, will provide a link to an iframe that you can include on your site. Since search engines can’t parse the contents of an iframe, there’s no SEO benefit from including them on a page. Visitors will, however, still be able to read the customer reviews in the iframe on your site and your associates ID is encoded into the iframe so you will still earn commissions on sales.

So why are Amazon making this change?

Put yourself in their position for a moment. You have a great site that gets lots of comments from visitors but there’s hundreds of thousands of people stealing that content and using it on their sites so you don’t get the full value of that content. What’s more, some of those people are ranking higher than you even though they’re using your content.

This is the reason I at least think Amazon are implementing this change. They’re protecting their own content. Good for Amazon. Lousy for associates who do drive a lot of traffic Amazon’s way.

So what plugins are affected? Here’s a (not comprehensive) list that comes to mind:

ReviewAZON
phpZON
Amazon Astores
Store Stacker
Amazon Auto Poster
WP Zon Builder

If there are any others you know of, let me know and I’ll add them to the list.

If you use any of these on your sites (I use ReviewAZON and phpZON myself), then your sites are going to be affected and it’s well worth contacting your plugin’s author to find out how you’re sites are going to suffer and how they’re going to deal with the change.

Associates earn 4%-7% with Amazon. Piddling commissions when compared to 50% commissions on Clickbank. But physical goods do seem to command low commissions, probably because margins are so tight. However, for Amazon, 4% of about $20 billion (estimated annual turnover) is a cool $800 million that comes straight from their profits. Maybe that’s incentive enough to cut some associates loose.

Making money with Amazon is not one of the easier online propositions. There are affiliates who build their sites exclusively around Amazon products and reviews and they’re the ones who are going to be hit squarely in the pocket here. Because they can no longer add customer reviews to their sites as real on-page content, their site rankings are going to suffer. That means fewer visitors and less sales. There’s no doubt that a certain percentage of affiliates are going to suffer badly from the fallout.

It’s yet another reason to follow the adage: “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket!”.

Associates who use Amazon products and reviews in among a range of other content will be less severely affected by the change. But it raises the issue of whether it’s even worth continuing as an Amazon associate. By making it more difficult for associates, less traffic will driven to Amazon and their profits will suffer. Whether that loss is counterbalanced by the commissions they would otherwise have to pay associates is open to question.

As ever, the waters in the internet marketing/affiliate marketing ocean are never calm.

So did Amazon decide to make this change under their own steam (maybe to reduce their resource usage)? Or were they enamoured of eBay’s affiliate model that purportedly rewards the big affiliates (and seems to penalise the small affiliates)? Or have Google been ratting their cage because the big G seems to be doing everything it can to get thin sites off the internet?

What’s your take on all this?

<a

If you build websites for profit or you’re looking for keywords to do article marketing on, then this is a superb tool. It pulls keywords from Google and provides a range of tools for analyzing those keywords for relevancy to your niche, checking the competition (and strength of that competition), hoe much traffic those keywords get and whether they’re profitable or not. There are numerous way to find out more about your competition so you can decide if a niche is worth going into or if it’s just too competetive. If you’re stuck for an affiliate program to match your selected niche, it will provide a list of suitable programs for you and will advise you on the best offers to promote. It will even find content for you. Use the above link to save 35% on the regular price for the software.

<a

PDA’s seem to have been subsumed into cellphones over the last few years, so it seemed that the best upgrade/replacement path was to opt for a smartphone.

Apple’s iPhone gets rave reviews, but there have been a lot of complaints recently about their draconian control over what apps<IMG

I’ve been hearing that apps that currently available are actually being removed from the marketplace because Apple deems them unsuitable for whatever reason they deem appropriate. It’s that old monopolistic ethic at work again…”It’s our way or the highway; you’re either with us or against us.” (imagine the only place you could buy books published by HarperCollins was their designated store).

I prefer platforms where such strict controls aren’t in place which is one reason I never strayed into Apple Mac territory when developing software applications. Now I’ve never used a Mac, don’t know anyone who’s owned one or who’s ever written software for one. I’ve only seen them up close in high-street stores and didn’t like what I saw (design-wise). Nothing about Apple’s products has ever enticed me (in fact, they just put me off).

The iPhone does look good though but it’s expensive and, from what I can see, you need to be tied into a contract to use one. Not for me. Things have moved on now since the iPhone was first introduced and it’s revolutionary interface isn’t that revolutionary any more.

So, since I wanted an unlocked (sim-free) phone that would double as a PDA/MP3/Video player, I looked around at what was available. A friend brought the HTC Desire to my attention as he’d just bought one. I guess I fell in love with it ‘cos I went out and bought one! I found the cheapest offer on Pixmania (€469/£399) but cheaper prices might be available on eBay.

It’s a lovely piece of kit. The screen is fantastic – AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) – crisp, bright, 480×800 pixels, easily read in daylight and doesn’t suffer contrast drops when seen at an angle.

The HTC Desire has a built-in MP3 player and video player (though it only plays MP4 files, so AVI’s and other video formats have to be converted for playing). It will sync with my Outlook calendar and contacts, can be connected to my PC as an external drive, can piggyback on my wi-fi connection for surfing the web, has a digital compass and GPS, and on and on. In other words, it’s a techie’s dream.

So, this is a phone I own (I’m not tied into a contract with it) which will probably get used more as a PDA than a phone. There are many places to get software for the phone. The iPhone has seniority here, but the HTC cellphone’s are proving to be very popular and getting great reviews and that means more and more apps will become available for the phone over the coming months. <img

I released the latest edition of my <a

I got my most recent blog post written up and published (My Article Marketing Strategy).

4. I managed to get a Squidoo lens set up for my training with Alex Jeffreys.

Now for what’s gone wrong…

If you read my earlier post about my Missed Schedule post problems in WordPress, you’ll know I’ve had some difficulties in resolving this thorny issue. While the solution that worked for me was to move to a different webhost, I still have blogs on my old webhost. Migrating them isn’t the easiest thing to do as some of them are huge (we’re talking 10,000+ posts on some blogs).

Well, one of them decided to go postal last week. It started chewing up the server resources up to the point where the server simply fell over. All websites on that server (including this blog) then ceased to work. I didn’t know anything about it as it happened overnight, my time, and the tech guys got everything restarted pretty quickly.

Three days later, the same thing happened – server crash and all sites down. Again, this was overnight, so I didn’t notice any problem but checking my Analytics stats the next day (yes, I know I don’t recommend using Analytics but Alex Jeffreys requires his students use it on their blogs so students’ traffic can be compared and this is my only blog that uses it), I found a dip in visitor numbers, so the server down time did affect me.

Then, to cap it off, two nights ago, a blog decided to go down in a blaze of glory, taking the server with it and, this time, causing corruption. Apparently, it was pretty disastrous. Files and sites had to be retrieved from backup and it took the best part of 12 hours to get everything up and running again. The good new is that the miscreant site has been identified and I’ve now taken it offline. The bad news is that it’s built the same was as my other autoblogs so I’m now left wondering if one of those will lose its marbles sometime in the future.

My webhost has been very understanding and helpful during these episodes and rather than shouting at me for getting something wrong, has worked with me to identify and fix the problem. But, as you can imagine, a fair amount of time that I could have devoted to pursuing Alex Jeffreys training in the last week had to be devoted elsewhere. So these server crashes have cost me both time and lost visitors (with the site being down).

So my lesson of the week is to not put important blogs on the same hosting account as other “test” blogs. Keep important sites segregated from everything else.

So what else has gone wrong?

Well, the cat’s developed asthma! Yes, apparently they can get it just like humans. Environmental factors and all that. Sounds pretty bad when he has an attack – a combined wheeze and cough. It looks like he’s trying to cough up a hairball but nothing comes up. So I whisked him off to the vet who prescribed him some anti-inflammatories. The problem is that the drugs are also used by humans and they come in sizeable capsules. The dosage is too high for cats so I have to cut the tablets in two.

The cat won’t touch any food that has medicine in it so I have to drop tablets down his throat. These tablets are full of powder which immediately spills out in his throat. It immediately foams up and he ends up retching. Not good. So now I plug the open end of the tablet with some cat food. At least that gets the tablet into his stomach intact. Half the time they seem to make him quesy, and he barfs up the tablet and whatever food is in his stomach, always on a carpet and never on a tile or wooden floor.

This cat is no stranger to barfing. He once blew up one of my TVs by barfing into the back of it!

Still, he’s a great cat, very entertaining and I don’t want him to be unhealthy.

Then the car packed up (I told you it was one of those weeks). The alternator’s knackered. What gets me is that I left the car in for a service a week or so ago and told them the alternator needed to be checked. They assured me they looked it over and it was fine. Obviously it wasn’t. After a bit of a shouting match in front of other customers, they agreed they’d made a mistake and they’d replace it free of charge.

I cracked a tooth too! Biting down on a burger, I hit a bit of bone it it and part of one of my teeth gave. Since all I have is a chipped tooth with no nerve exposed, it’s not considered worthy of emergency treatment and I have to wait 3 weeks before the dentist has a slot available to fix it.

Oh yes, I almost forgot, my broadband connection went down over the weekend. I thought my router had died after trying a few tests and I was all set to dash out and buy a replacement. Then I thought the problem might be the phone line. After calling my phone company, they confirmed there was a broadband outage but couldn’t say when it would be fixed as it was a weekend. The line was down 10 hours. Since then, I get several dropouts a day, so whatever they’re doing, they’re making a mess if things for their subscribers.

So here I am on a Thursday morning, revisiting the last 7-10 days wondering if the worst is now over, or there’s yet more to come…

[Update: June 4: No, there was more to come. I migrated this blog from my Webhost4SEO hosting account to my VPS hosting account. It's the first time I've moved a blog between webhosts. All seemed to go well but when I tried links on the blog, I got 404 errors. Turns out I needed to save the settings on the Permalinks tab again (don't know why). The blog was now up and running...except it wasn't quite. I tried to update this post and nothing happened. WordPress just sat there. Checking the home page (to see the page load time), I couldn't get the site to load. Seems the post update had caused some kind of hang on the blog.

So I put in a support call to ask what was happening. Mod_Security rules had prevented the site from operating correctly. I'm waiting to hear if that's because the WordPress files were moved from another webhost and not created natively in my hosting account through Fantastico, or because of some other reason. Anyway, support whitelisted the domain and all appears to be working now.

I'd appreciate, however, if you'd let me know if you come across any peculiarities or non-working areas of the blog.]

<a

From June 8th 2010, we will treat this issue as an intentional breach of our terms and conditions and any affiliate exhibiting this behavior will be expired.

In other words – FIX IT!

The easiest solution is to just switch to <a

You should have received an email from Wade Wells (phpBay author) informing you of the changes you need to make.

Remember, you’ve only got till June 8th to make the change or ePN will terminate your account.

<a

The basic premise is you start at a very low price and as units are sold, the price goes up. That way the folks that know what they want and act fast are rewarded with a lower price than those who “think it over” and wait.

<a
